Activities

For more than a century, the members of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution have dedicated themselves to the promotion of patriotism, education, and historic preservation. The Daughters of the Ruth Davidson Chapter, NSDAR, continue diligently to be involved in all these areas.

Patriotism:

  • Prepare and serve monthly dinners to homeless veterans at the Veterans Restoration Quarters
  • Participate in annual memorial services and wreath-laying ceremonies at the Battle of Kings Mountain, the Battle at the Cow Pens, and the Battle of Guilford Courthouse.
  • Distribute cheerful items to veterans on Veterans Day, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day in the Charles George VA Hospital, North Carolina State Veterans Home, Veterans Restoration Quarters, Aura House for Female Veterans.
  • Participate in “Bells Across America” at 4 p.m. on September 17 to celebrate the signing of the Constitution
  • Participate in the DAR National Day of Service to first responders, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), firefighters, police officers, and sheriff officers by preparing cookies and baked goods in recognition of their service
  • Adopted a recent graduate from The Crossnore School and Children’s Home as he joins the United States Marine Corps
  • Prepare denim shoe uppers for Sole Hope where they are assembled with a recycled tire sole and sent to Africa to Ugandan people suffering from a crippling parasite called “jiggers”

Education:

  • Participate in Constitution Week activities at local elementary schools and libraries during the week of September 17–23 by placing displays about the Constitution as the basis for America’s great heritage and the foundation for our way of life
  • Sponsor the American History Essay Contest and the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest at all of our local schools
  • Sponsor the DAR Good Citizens and Scholarship Contest for seniors in area high schools
  • Recognize outstanding JROTC cadets with medals at three high schools
  • Perform short skits with costumes in schools
  • Collect and deliver Christmas stockings, Beds in a Bag, and Regifts for the Blair Fraley Campus Store at The Crossnore School and Children’s Home, a DAR supported school

Preservation:

  • Planted pollinator gardens to attract bees and other insects which pollinate
  • Participated in Arbor Day and Earth Day by planting trees and removing trash from public areas
  • Exploring how to aid in preserving the Old Broad River Cemetery, located in a remote rural area which has fallen into decay
