Activities
Our chapter has many volunteer activities. Below is a list of a few that are ongoing:
- Participate in an American flag retirement ceremony along with the Boy Scouts, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), and Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.)
- Provide support for veterans at Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, North Carolina
- Commemorate Veterans Day by placing wreaths on local veterans’ graves
- Support Veterans by participating in the Veterans Healing Farm Resource Fair
- Sponsor wreaths through Wreaths Across America and participate by laying wreaths in December at the National Cemetery in Black Mountain, North Carolina
- Participate in Bells Across America on September 17 to honor the signing of the U. S. Constitution
- Promote Constitution Week in our schools and community by presenting programs at local schools
- Contribute to the Crossnore Communities for Children in Crossnore, North Carolina and other DAR supported schools
- Promote American history essay contests in our local schools and invite winners to read their essays at a meeting
- Present certificates and medals to outstanding JROTC members at local high schools
- Participate in the National Day of Service that is celebrated on October 11 in honor of DAR’s founding by recognizing emergency response workers
- Organize DAR Good Citizens Award and scholarship contest for local high school seniors
- Recognize naturalized citizens after the annual Naturalization Ceremony on July 3
In addition to our activities, the Joseph McDowell Chapter, NSDAR, has interesting programs at the monthly meetings such as:
- “Honor Air and Brothers Like These”
- “Veterans and their Service Dogs”
- “Lineage Research”
- “American History Essay Winners”
- “DAR Supported Schools”
- “The 19th Amendment and Women’s Right to Vote”
