Chapter Projects & Activities
The James Hunter Chapter, NSDAR, is dedicated to the mission of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution in promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children. We annually participate in programs of NSDAR and the NCSDAR. Our chapter sponsors activities in each area of focus highlighted by the following:
Promoting Patriotism
- Delivers cards of thanks on Veterans Day and homemade Valentine cards to veterans in the VA Medical Center
- Participates in naturalization ceremonies
- Observes Constitution Week in September with various activities
- Participates in the DAR National Day of Service by preparing cookies and baked goods for first responders, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), firefighters and police officers in recognition of their service
- Writes and sends greeting cards to active duty service personnel
- Collects and sends manufacturer’s coupons to various troops overseas
- Donates to an NSDAR program that provides active military with phone cards to phone home at no cost
- Supports Wreaths Across America and participates in the wreath laying ceremony at the Mayodan Municipal Cemetery
- Marches in Veterans Day parades and helps Cub Scouts with flag retirement ceremonies
- Supports U.S. military active duty members and veterans by volunteering and giving donations to the Veterans Administration like hats, scarves, and ear savers
- Participates in the Stand Down event for veterans in our local community
Preserving American History
- Participates in local historic programs, tours, and events
- Promotes the preservation of local historical sites, venues, and monuments
- Researches service and lineage of American Revolutionary War Patriots
- Volunteers hours indexing and categorizing historic records
- Marks graves of American Revolutionary War soldiers
- Works with our public library and town hall to host workshops on genealogy and genealogical swap meetings
Promoting Education
- Sponsors the American History Essay Contests for students in grades five through eight
- Donates ink cartridges to a local high school for recycle to purchase calculators
- Supports the Bugler Gillies Society, Children of the American Revolution
- Donates books and magazines to local schools, doctor’s officers, and nursing homes to promote literacy
- Creates interactive Constitution Week displays for elementary schools
- Supports Crossnore School and Children’s Home with donations of books and school supplies for the children and items for their thrift store
- Donates items for the benefit of the children and their families at Crossnore School and Children’s Home
- Collects Box Tops and coke caps for DAR Schools.
- Encourages students in grades K-12 to enter the Junior American Citizens Contest to express their patriotism
- Sponsors and presents JROTC Awards for cadets at Dalton L. McMichael High School at the end of the year banquet
- Sponsors the DAR Youth Citizenship awards
- Organizes DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest for seniors at five local high school
- Sponsors a teacher for Outstanding Teacher of American History Contest
DAR Scholarships
The chapter supplies scholarship information to the local high schools to encourage students to submit applications to a variety of scholarships through the NSDAR Scholarships and the NCSDAR Scholarships programs. All applications must be submitted by January 31 prior to the next academic year.
In addition, the chapter sponsors the Susie Johnson Lauten Scholarship, which is named for the first regent of our chapter. It is a non–renewable scholarship awarded to one senior from either Stokes County High School, Dalton L McMichael High School, or Bethany Community School.
