The tradition of celebrating Constitution Week was started many years ago by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). In 1955, the DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. Our Constitution Chair plans many programs for our elementary schools such as power point presentations, bulletin boards in the schools and telling the history of our country.
Our chapter serves the three high schools of Brunswick County for the DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest. The program is open to all high school seniors enrolled in public or private schools accredited by the state board of education. The program recognizes outstanding young people who exhibit the qualities of good citizenship in their homes, schools, and communities.
Our chapter historian has worked to provide at least five books on historical men and women to ten elementary schools in Brunswick County. These books are for the younger grades and this has become a yearly event.
Junior and senior students in the JROTC program in high school are eligible to participate in the JROTC awards. The DAR American History Essay Contest is open to students in grades 5-8, in public school, private school or home-schooled. Also the Patriots of the American Revolution High School Essay Contest is open to students in grades 9-12.
Education is one of the three primary objectives of our chapter and was adopted in the original Bylaws of the National Society DAR. The DAR School Committee supports projects at the Crossnore Communities for Children. We support the “Bird Cage” that takes new or gently used items for the benefit of the children and their families. All during the year, we participate in Box Tops for Education to be used for purchasing necessary items.
Our members are encouraged to participate in the variety of projects that aid and support veterans. This includes holidays and special events, projects at the VA hospital in Fayetteville. These include providing lap robes, magazines, books, games, and puzzles to injured/ill veterans. Also, cards for Valentine’s Day and other holidays are sent to local veterans and the veterans in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
The Historic Preservation Committee seeks to honor our nation’s heritage, local heritage, and focus on the future.
The Publicity and Media Committee is dedicated to informing DAR members and our communities about the historic preservation, education, and patriotic mission and activities of the DAR. This committee is responsible for the chapter website, Facebook page, chapter blog, as well as contributing articles to the local newspapers, television station, and State/National Society publications.
The DAR Project Patriot Committee is the official Daughters of the American Revolution committee that supports America’s service personnel in current conflicts abroad. Individual members and chapters are encouraged to support the men and women serving in conflicts abroad in any way appropriate. These activities could range from adopting a platoon to sending care packages to the troops.
The Commemorative Events Committee encourages chapters to celebrate the events cited by the National Society such as becoming a partner with the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration organization. The primary mission is thanking, honoring, and remembering our Vietnam veterans and their families.
