Welcome!

The Otway Burns Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR), welcomes you to our website. We are united by our patriotism, love for country, and the opportunity to make a difference in our community, our state, and our country. Our focus is on historic preservation, patriotism, and education. DAR awards multiple scholarships, and our chapter members can help with the application process. More information can be found on the NSDAR Scholarships page and the North Carolina Society DAR Scholarships page.

Our chapter was established on April 16, 1980, and named after American Revolutionary War Patriot Otway Burns, the elder. The chapter was organized by 16 members including organizing Chapter Regent Doris Lancaster Thompson. The chapter is chartered in Swansboro, North Carolina, on the Crystal Coast. Swansboro has a rich maritime history spanning Colonial and Civil War eras and continues to this day.

Otway Burns was a businessman in Swansboro and lived on a plantation a couple of miles outside of town where he raised his family. He served in the American Revolution as a soldier in the militia and also furnished material aid as a patriotic service. Otway Burns is not to be confused with his son and privateer, Captain Otway Burns.

The meetings of the Otway Burns Chapter, NSDAR, are held the first Wednesday of each month at 11 a.m., September through May. If you are interested in joining DAR and want to find out more, please contact us (see the menu on left) for more information.
