William Gaston
Gastonia is the largest city and the county seat of Gaston County, North Carolina. It is also the second largest satellite city in the Charlotte, North Carolina area.
The William Gaston Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR), was named after the man for whom the county and the courthouse were named — Judge William Gaston. He was a United States representative from North Carolina; a United States senator; and he served in the North Carolina House of Representatives, and the state senate. While in the state senate, he served on the judiciary committee. He was elected by the legislature, to the North Carolina Supreme Court. Gaston is, perhaps, best known as the author of the state song, “The Old North State.”
Judge Gaston died in 1846, two years before the county was formed and named after him. His father was a Revolutionary War patriot. It is said that when his father was killed by a Tory, baby William was splattered with his father’s blood.
On February 22, 1911, a meeting was held at the home of Mrs. G. W. Ragan, to discuss the formation of the William Gaston Chapter. This anniversary has always been observed as “Chapter Day”. The first meeting was held at the home of the founding regent, Mrs. Rufus M. Johnston.
