History of Samuel Johnston Chapter

The organizational meeting of the Samuel Johnston Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, was held on November 20,1963.

Samuel Johnston (1733-1816) was one of those rare men who, being endowed with learning, wisdom, leadership ability and sterling character, was able to command respect and following from his countrymen in those troublesome and formative years just before and after the Revolution. His public service career covered a period of 44 years.  During this period he held every available public office. He was a legislator, a delegate to four Provincial congresses, President of two Constitutional conventions, a member of the Continental Congress, a judge, a governor, and the first United States Senator from North Carolina.  All of these services coming at a most difficult time in our State's history caused him to be ranked second to no other statesman from North Carolina.
